Why an unreserved field can lose its index slot

The performance warning about fields read from raw data now has the mechanism behind it written down: a storage file holds roughly 5,000 columns, unreserved fields compete for the slots left over, and the winners are picked from how often a field appears in the data being written rather than how often you query it. Keep a dataset under about 5,000 distinct fields, and reserve the fields you query to take them out of that competition. Learn more
