WSC Sports is a pioneer in AI-powered sports content technology, empowering the NBA, ESPN, YouTubeTV, LaLiga and 460 other sports organizations to connect with their fans through AI-tailored sports content experiences. WSC Sports’ platform automates the creation, management, and distribution of content, enabling sports rights holders to expand reach, grow fan bases, and unlock revenue opportunities across digital platforms.
Since WSC Sports supports live broadcasts, maintaining system uptime is vital. To quickly detect and address issues as they arise, their IT teams relied heavily on log data and had chosen a major observability provider.
WSC Sports’ IT infrastructure consists of 700 microservices deployed between 3 different cloud providers, and generates huge quantities of telemetry data. As that amount of data grew each month, however, so did their observability bill. To manage these rising expenses, they soon had to pick and choose the data they sent to their observability platform. Ultimately, this led to them only sampling 2% of all of their available log data.
In addition to high costs, fine tuning their provider’s logging tool to their specific needs proved cumbersome. Seemingly small issues—such as case sensitive search—became obstacles and began to hinder WSC Sports’ monitoring efficiency. Furthermore, reaching out to their provider’s customer support for assistance often resulted in a frustrating 2-3 week back-and-forth process. After 2.5 years with this provider, they decided it was time to explore alternatives and search for a more effective observability solution.
“The cost of our previous observability provider was astronomical compared to Coralogix. And we just weren’t getting enough for our money.”
Ran Sagy, Backend Tech Lead WSC Sports
The WSC Sports’ DevOps Team began assessing new observability providers with 3 key priorities in mind: finding a better logging tool, reducing their observability costs, and receiving better support. After the platform was recommended by one of their investors, they decided to try Coralogix.
The core part of the migration to Coralogix took less than a week and required minimal work. Once the log ingestion was set up, the DevOps team were able to use out-of-the-box alerts and extensions to get started. After that, the Coralogix support team migrated their heaviest and most business critical dashboard for them, making sure they were operational from Day one.
The migration of WSC Sports’ infrastructure logs took slightly longer. Initially, Coralogix didn’t initially offer a native integration with their Azure infrastructure, prompting the WSC Sports DevOps team to use OpenTelemetry to send their logs to the platform. However, they quickly realized they didn’t like the way OpenTelemetry handled the data, and raised this issue with the Coralogix team. In just three weeks, Coralogix built a native Azure integration that met WSC Sports’ requirements and allowed them to ingest data exactly how they wanted to.
Since beginning their Coralogix journey, WSC Sports has been aided by dedicated account managers and support agents. The WSC Sports DevOps team also makes use of the coralogix support chat, which responds to their questions directly within a few minutes.
“We didn’t expect to have access to people that understood the product enough, and that were technical enough, to give us answers in real time. The chat support was surprising and amazing to see.” Ran Sagy ,Backend Tech Lead WSC Sports
WSC Sports’ initial objective was to find a better logging tool, but they slowly realized that Coralogix had more to offer. They started ingesting metrics and traces, began using Coralogix APM and discovered that Coralogix custom dashboards could greatly improve their monitoring capabilities.
In fact, the DevOps team recently built custom dashboards to assist them in delivering real-time highlights of a global sporting event. The alerts and dashboards helped the team troubleshoot their system proactively to avoid any crashes
“The alerts and the dashboards that we were able to fine-tune before the event meant that we caught all the problems before anything happened. That was critical for the success of our customers’ constant engagement with their fans.” Ran Sagy, Backend Tech Lead WSC Sports
Over 300 WSC Sports employees now rely on Coralogix, their observability bill has decreased by over 50%, and they are extremely satisfied with their choice of Coralogix as their observability platform.
WSC Sports’ transition to Coralogix has unlocked a range of benefits, including:
Over 50% Cost Savings
By switching to Coralogix, WSC Sports has reduced their observability spend by more than 50%. With their previous observability provider, WSC Sports had to index 100% of the data they ingested, and were billed based on the length of time they wanted to store the data for. Now, they use Coralogix’s TCO Optimizer to choose which data they want to index, directly in the UI. They currently index roughly 70% of their data while sending the rest directly to archive storage, where they can still rapidly query it thanks to Coralogix’s Archive Query capabilities.
Increased Ingestion Volume
Given their previous provider’s steep pricing, WSC Sports could only sample 2% of their data. Once they started using Coralogix’s TCO Optimizer, they were able to increase this number to 15%, allowing them to gain deeper insights and make more informed decisions without breaking their budget.
Full-Stack Visibility
While WSC Sports was initially looking for a good logging platform, they gained much more than that with Coralogix. They now take advantage of almost every feature that Coralogix has to offer, and are always looking to improve their observability practices. In fact, they are currently planning workshops with the Coralogix support team to better leverage metrics and debugging features, and improve their MTTD and MTTR.
Unmatched Customer Support
WSC Sports has benefitted from a super responsive and knowledgeable customer support team both throughout their migration and on a daily basis. The world-class support, featuring a 24/7 in-app chat service and a response time under one minute, is what has made their journey with Coralogix a real success.
“If you want observability you can count on, and people you can count on for customer support – Coralogix is your choice” – Ran Sagy
Switching to Coralogix allowed WSC Sports to level up their observability practices and reduce their costs by more than 50%. The efficient logging tool they initially looked for turned out to be a complete, full-stack observability solution, with customer support that they can truly count on only a click away.
